ITINERARY

 

Day 1: Departure Day

  • Fly from departure city to London

Day 2: London

  • On arrival you will be met by an Educational World Tours representative.
  • Transfer straight to London to check in to your hotel Later, head for a half-day guided walking tour of London with a Blue Badge Guide.
  • Dinner at your hotel or local restaurant.

Accommodation: Moderate hotel in London - 2 nights

Day 3: London

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • Today you have a full-day guided coach tour of London. Sites of interest include: Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Picadilly Circus, Oxford Street, Covent Garden, Leicester Square, St Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.
  • Dinner at your hotel or local restaurant

Day 4: London

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • After breakfast travel to Bletchly Park and enjoy the guided tour of the facility – Bletchly Park is the home of British code breaking and the birthplace of modern information technology (can be considered to be one of the birthplaces of the Internet). Learn more about secret intelligence, and the profound influence it had on the outcome of Second World War.
  • Afternoon free to explore London at your leisure.
  • Optional - Jack the Ripper Tour that follows a truly atmospheric route and which goes straight into the old, narrow alleyways where you will feel like you’ve been transported back to the mean streets of the Victorian East End. In addition, you will visit more murder sites and locations related to the Jack the Ripper murders than on other Jack the Ripper walks, and be guided in your experience by true experts on the subject.
  • We take the late afternoon ferry (Brittany Ferries) from Portsmouth to Cane (France).
  • Dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 5: Caen - Day Trip to Pegasus Bridge and Juno Beach

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • This morning you will visit the Pegasus Bridge and Pegasus Bridge Museum which tells the story of the 6th (Airborne) Division on D'Day.
  • The original Pegasus Bridge is on the grounds of the Museum after it was replaced some years ago.
  • Continue on to visit the Canadian War Cemetery in Beny Sur Mer.
  • This afternoon you will tour Juno Beachand Center which is the Canadian Landing site during D-Day.
  • The Canadian D-Day Beach of Juno offers a tour of Canada's Juno Beach Centre which pays homage to the 45,000 Canadians that lost their lives in the war, 5,500 of which were killed in the battle of Normandy through a detailed and interactive exhibition.
  • ***Depending on the time of the tour. Later in the afternoon, you will be able to watch the ceremony of the Lowering of the Colours if you wish. The American ceremony is the biggest, as well as the most well-known and moving one of the Normandy Landing cemeteries.
  • Return to Caen.
  • Dinner at your hotel or local restaurant

Day 6: Caen - Day Trip to Arromanches and Omaha Beach

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • Morning visit to Arromanches where the first Mulberry was built. The film “The Price of Freedom” mixes unreleased archive footage from war correspondents with present day and the building also houses an exhibition.
  • Continue on to Omaha Beach. After some time on the beach you will stop at Pont du Hoc to see the Memorial before visiting the Visitor’s Centre and then the cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. There you will then see the remaining German gun battery and the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. The visit begins with the Visitor Center where the Operation Overlord will be explained to you. Outside, a viewpoint diagram in front of a water mirror will show the beaches where the Allied forces landed. Looking to the West you will see the cemetery and a round chapel behind it. The cemetery contains 9,387 gravestones perfectly aligned on a majestic expanse of green lawn.
  • On the way back to Caen you will visit Bayeux and see the Bayeux Tapestry.
  • The Tapestry of Bayeux, one of the greatest medieval artworks. It depicts the story of Harold, William the Conqueror, and the Norman conquest of England in 1066.
  • Dinner at your hotel or local restaurant.

Day 7: Caen

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • Drive to Beaumont Hamel (approx. 1-hour drive)
  • Visit Beaumont Hamel and the Battle of the Somme site.
  • The Battle of the Somme was a battle during World War I that was fought between the Entente (Austia- Hungry and Germany) and the Triple Alliance (Britain, France and Russia) and took place July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper reaches of the River Somme in France.
  • Proceed to visit the Thiepval Memorial, the largest British war memorial in the world. This memorial is for the 72,337 missing British and South African servicemen who died in the Battles of the Somme of the First World War between 1915 and 1918.
  • Dinner at your hotel or local restaurant.

Day 8: Caen / Vimy Ridge

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • This morning you will visit the Normandy Museum.
  • This museum is design to be a multimedia Mémorial museum is devoted to World War II, the 1944 Battle of Normandy and the Cold War.
  • Enjoy some free time in Caen.
  • Caen is a charming port town and the capital of Calvados in the Normandy region. It was a pivotal region during WWII especially the Battle of Normandy or D-Day. In addition to WWII this has been a strategic location for a milleum as it is also the location that William the conquer departed for Britain, as is evident by the 1060 Chateau de Caen which was built by the King.
  • Afternoon drive to Vimy Ridge
  • Dinner at your hotel or local restaurant

Day 9: Vimy Ridge / Paris

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • This morning you will visit in Vimy Ridge you will take part in the following visits:
  • Tour of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial Park.
  • Tour of the underground tunnels and trenches in the Canadian National Vimy Memorial Park.
  • Visit the two Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintained cemeteries in the Canadian National Vimy Memorial Park.
  • Vimy Ridge which was a site taken by the Canadian Armed Forces during World War 1 on April 9th, 1917. This hill was situated on the Maginot line and therefore was strategically important. After the conclusion of the war, Vimy Ridge was given to the government of Canada and is currently staffed by Canadian Students. In addition to Vimy Ridge students can also visit WWI sites such as Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial Park, St Julien, Tyne Cot Cemetery & Passchendaele.
  • Afterwards drive to Paris (approx. 2.5 hours)
  • Dinner at your hotel or local restaurant

Day 10: Vimy Ridge / Paris

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • Morning tour of Paris with a local sightseeing guide to explore the French Capital. Discover the highlights - The Eiffel Tower, Arc the Triumph, the Champs Elysees, the Petit and Grand Palais among others.
  • Afternoon visit to the Louvre this morning, one of the largest museums in the world! The Musée du Louvre houses 35,000 works of art drawn from eight departments, displayed in over 60,000 square meters of exhibition space dedicated to the permanent collections. Explore the works on display, taking a thematic or cross-departmental approach. (OBS: closed on Tuesdays) Late afternoon visits to the Eiffel Tower.
  • Dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Evening cruise on the Seine River.

Day 11: Departure from Paris

  • Fly from Paris to home city
